Mark Newhouse Finished 9th in the WSOP Main Event Last Year...When He Registered This Year, All He Wanted To Do Was Not Finish 9th (And You'll Never Believe What Happened Next)

FTW - When Mark Newhouse made history in July by securing his spot in the World Series of Poker main event final table for the second straight year, he felt good about one thing knowing he’d return four months later with the third-highest chip stack among the nine remaining players. “I’m looking forward to not finishing ninth,” Newhouse said, alluding to his ninth-place finish in 2013. “Ninth is brutal, man.”

Last year in the $10,000 buy-in main event to the World Series of Poker, Mark Newhouse finished 9th out of 6,352. He got a little over $733,000 for 9th, while first was over $8 million. So what do you think happened this year? Not only did he tweet the above right after he registered…but spoiler alert…he then proceeded to go out last night and finish 9th for $730,000. One of the most unreal outcomes for back to back Main Event final tables possible. First place this year is $10 million. And he got 9th. Again. For $730,000. Again.

Everything about it is ridiculous. First, outlasting 13,000 people in back to back years is nearly impossible. The odds are preposterous. But then finishing 9th for the second year in a row? Brutal. $730,000 is cool. You know what’s cooler? $10,000,000. But hey, you win some you lose some. At least he still has cool shades.
